£4,000 raised by London Marathon mum
Months of training, a day of running, endless fundraising, sore feet but thousands raised for us!
Recruitment firm director Noreen McKechnie took on the London Marathon to raise money to fund our bereavement weekends.
Her donation of £4,070.42 will fund one whole specialist support weekend for up to 25 children. Plus – there will enough to part-fund a second.
It was raised through online donations, tins in pubs and a raffle with some wonderful prizes!
Noreen’s sons Cameron, 12 and Alexander, 9, came on one of our support weekends after their dad died suddenly in November 2016 and she says the help and support they received made a huge difference to them.
“They were able to meet other children and learn techniques and coping strategies to deal with their grief not only initially but throughout their lives.”
Workshops include art therapy and making memory boxes.
She added: “The boys got to meet other bereaved children; which helps many of them feel less isolated in their grief. I know this was a big factor for my children.”
Each bereavement weekend, for children aged 6-16, costs £3,000 to run and brave Noreen has juggled looking after her two sons and running her business, Diamond Search Recruitment based in Ashford to raise the huge donation. Many children will now benefit in the same way her sons did.
Noreen said: “It was hard to fit in the training around looking after my boys and running my business but I did it! HOLG has given us so much as a family that I wanted to raise money and awareness of them because I know there will be families out there who need their help but just don’t know about them. It was a neighbour who told me about them and I’m so glad she did. To know that other children will benefit like my boys did is a wonderful feeling.”
HOLG CEO Caroline Ford, said: “It was a great atmosphere in London for the marathon and I enjoyed cheering Noreen on. She did an amazing job and we’re so pleased with her fundraising which will pay for an entire bereavement weekend plus part-fund a second.”
Would you like to raise money for us? We rely completely on donations and grant-funding, needing £130,000 each year to offer our services for free to the families we support.
